The existing garden to this family home in Godalming comprised mainly lawn. The brief to DIG in the Olympic year of 2012 was to add colour, then more colour.
Forming a ‘gateway’ from the terrace to open lawns beyond, DIG introduced a quadrant of Yew cubes for winter structure. From here led a long pathway bordered by planting beds. To one border a simple carpet of the silver grass Festuca Elijah Blue was interspersed with the small daisy Erigeron karvinskianus, resilient to occasional trampeling of children exiting the adjacent pool.
The other border was planted with a rich tapestry of long flowering perennials in hot colours including firery red Crocosmia lucifer, plum Sanguisorba tanna, acidic yellow Alchemilla, with Achillea terracotta, Geranium psilostemon, and Geum Mrs J Bradshaw.
A gentle arc of beech columns and the introduction of a spectacular Catalpa aurea provided a simple but key focal point in the garden beyond.
