With the impact of traffic becomming increasigly intrusive the priority of this brief was to create a visual barrier between the property and the road. In developing the design the project also offered an opportunity to soften the expanse of hard landscaping and introduce some personality through elements of soft landscaping.
A deep band of primarily evergreen planting was introduced along the boundary. DIG was keen to avoid obvious 'screening' so a range of plants with contrasting leaf forms, colour and scale were adopted to provide variety. Groups were repeated to unify the substantial boudary; tall ligustrums, photinias and prunus lusitanica to give height. Viburnum and physocarpus for mid level screening and seasonal flowers, box and liriope for a low weed suppressing membrane.
Perhaps the most impact was provided by the introduction of a curvilinear lawn into which specimen trees were placed providing a strong focal point.
